The Ohakune Ratepayers and Residents’ Society Inc was incorporated on 19th October 2023 with registration number 50184592.
The purpose of the society is outlined in our constitution which is available for download.
Primary Objectives
- Advocate to Local Government, Regional Government and the Central Government of New Zealand on behalf of the community of Ohakune and its surrounds on specific issues of concern to the community and to secure the fair expenditure of the general rates levied by Local Government, Regional Government and other statutory bodies operating within the district for the benefit of ratepayers, residents and visitors.
- Promote the general advancement and improvement of the Ohakune township in the Provincial District of Ruapehu and its environments and surrounds, commercially as a place of residence and for those using holiday homes and tourists and other appropriate ways.
- To Represent and promote the interests of members of the Society providing those interests are not inconsistent with the other objects and duties of the Society.
The Society plans to have policies within council modified to include the Society in any matters concerning Ohakune, to ensure we are consulted on matters of importance, so we don’t find ourselves in the same situation we are now in.
About Ohakune Ratepayers and Residents' Society
The society was established following Ruapehu District Councils decision to gift/sell a ratepayer asset to Kainga Ora. This was negotiated behind closed doors between 2020-2023, with the public only being notified after a contract had been signed.
Over 200+ members of the community banded together to plead with Council to consult on the matter and not build a state housing project right next to the Carrot Park, the tourist towns pride and joy.
A public meeting was held by council, with a record breaking attendance, with over 95% of those in attendance requesting council STOP & Rethink. It was clear to the Mayor & CEO of Ruapehu District Council that opposition was strong however council continue to report to the media that a select few are in opposition, hence the need to setup the society.
The society will be leading an aggregated Class Action / Judicial Review against Council for the multiple breaches it has committed and the lack of transparency in the role as councillors. We will be seeking damages from council and will request personal liability against those that have continued to act against the wishes of the majority of the town.
